Smoking- how bad on board?

Both my wife and I can't stand being around cigarette/cigar smoke. We've cruised on Carnival Paradise which is totally smoke-free, but in August we're thinking of joining some other family members who are cruising on RC Voyager of the Seas.

I know you can't smoke in the restaurants or main theater, but how prevalent is smoking elsewhere on the ship. We don't want to spend thousands of dollars and find that we can't enjoy large sections of the ship. Do the lounges get pretty smokey? How about the atrium/shopping area? Does there tend to be a lot of smokers on deck, around the pool,etc?

I also know that you can't get a non-smoking cabin like you can in a hotel. Are we going to board and find out that our cabin reeks from the previous guests? Or that we have to walk through smokey halls to reach our cabin.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated, especially from others who are as overly sensitive to smoke as we are.

Steve, it shouldn't be that bad. Expect the casino and most bar-lounges to be fairly smoky, but smoking is prohibited in most indoor areas (the atrium/"street", show lounges, etc.) Smoking is allowed on deck (outside) too, but on most cruises I have taken, I have not found that to be a problem. Most cabins are also quite clean-smelling, though if you are very sensitive to smoke, you will probably notice a slight residual odor. Paradise was a great choice for you! However, I think you will find Voyager to be enjoyable, just the air in a few areas not quite up to your standards.

Steve, I was on the Majesty a few weeks ago and I never had a problem with smoke and I'm really sensitive. Just stay out of the Cigar Bar.

I was on the majesty a few years ago and then the enchantment two month's ago, both ships had designated smoking area's. I couldn't complain when I'd see smokers on the outside deck's since it is a well ventilated area. The beauty of these ships is there's always some other place to go if need be. Definitely avoid certain area's of the casino, lounges and most of all the cigar bar.
