Royal Caribbean has been very good with the quality of their food and I wouldb e surprised to find that the Mariner is not consistent with the rest of the fleet. I cruised on her last year and the food was excellent. I hope you share your experience when you return.
A group of us sailed on the Mariner the week of February 27, 2005. We live in a big city with numerous 4 star restaurants that we can frequent as often as we like, so we saw no reason to pay the extra cover charge for Chops or Portofino. We ate in the dining room every night and the food was excellent from the appetizers through the desserts.
I'll be in the same ship with different itenerary leaving on April 24 and will let you know about my experience then. However I can tell from my pass experiences that I never had a terrible food on the 3 of the voyager class ships I cruised with. All of them was good, not great nor bad. Dining experience at the specialty restaurants was much better than the dining rooms justifying extra $20.
I have sailed on Mariner two times. My family thought the food in the dining room was excellent, and the "snacks" at Promenade cafe. The food in the Windjammer ranged from good to great.

My wife and I just finished our very 1st cruise aboard the Mariner. (April 3-10) We both thought the food was very good. We only gained 5 lbs over the 7 days. The service was also excellent. We would do this cruise again in a heartbeat.
