How much do you tip the porters at the docks?

Depends on the port, but since we usually have 4 checked bags I give the porter 10 dollars - however I have been known to up it to 20 dollars for someone who really hustles and gets us gone as fast as possible.

The usual is 2 dollars per bag for most ports.

Do we have to tip these people? Are they the ones that take ur bags as you are getting on the ship? Also, we are using a shuttle service from Orlando to Port Canaveral..should we tip the driver too- how much is customary? We are using a shuttle service tied in with the hotel we are staying- it was only 25 pp RT (hope they are reliable!)

I always thought that the custom was to pay $1 per bag...has it gone up? If so, I have been short-changing my porters!

jodiroadie, it's hard to say when it went up--I've been tipping $2 a bag for at least 7-8 years now.

candi, no, you don't HAVE to tip the porters; and yes, they are the ones that take your bags when you arrive at the pier and get them on the ship. But if you stop and think what it would be like to do it yourself, I think you will realize that is worth at least $2 a bag. And like Dave, if someone is really helpful, like a porter once that found us a nice bench in the shade (this is post-cruise), showed us where the restrooms and snack wagon were, and was just as nice as he could be, that's worth $20.

And yes, you should tip the shuttle driver also, 15%-20%. On a $25 fare I would tip $5.

Exactly!!! On the last cruise we went on I told the guy I would take care of him if he made sure my bags got on the ship as I had just lost and gotten one of my bags back from the airline!!! I had my bags pretty darn quick.

Seeing your bags in your stateroom after a long journey is worth at least $2 a bag. The porters are eager to help to get your tips. They work hard and deserve every penny. Smiling faces and friendly chatter gets a bigger tip. For 2 bags $4-6 would be the range.

Once the bags are delivered into the bowels of the ship it is every available server, cook, and cabin steward that organizes the bags and delivers them to the staterooms. (saw it on television )
