Hello Excited14, welcome to Cruise-Chat. As of January 1, 2008 passports will be required for all air and sea travel. So, if I were you I'd get one A.S.A.P.. To read more about passport requirements, CLICK HERE.

I just got finished reading that processing time is now 6 weeks for routine and 3 weeks for expedited. It also said that things are suppose to be back to normal.

From what I understand, while technically you don't need a passport until 1 January 2008 to take a cruise, nevertheless you would be VERY HIGHLY ADVISED to obtain one prior to your departure for the following reason:

Should you for some reason miss the ship at a port or have to return home in an emergency, you may well have extreme difficulty getting back into your own country as all AIR TRAVEL to and from the Caribbean, etc., required a passport as of last Monday. You would be extremely well served were you to get down to your nearest passport office as soon as possible!

That may well not occur to you but it's undoubtedly going to happen to someone. As Clint Eastwood as "Dirty Harry" Callaghan said way back when, "Do you feel lucky?"

Have a great cruise and good luck!

4 people in our party of 9 got their passports this last month and it just barely took 4 weeks. So if you need to get one, it shouldn't take too long....happy sailing! We leave December 1st on the Jewel of the Seas.

Can someone please tell me..Where do ya'll normally keep your passports while on the cruise? Do I need to carry it with me at all times, or just when going off the ship?
This is my second cruise, but my first with a passport.

Thanks,
Tracy

In our case the cruiseline usually keeps it.
But i would leave it in the safe when going ashore.
We take a photocopy of the picture page & carry that with us.
We also have a booklet with the Consulates location for each country ...just in case.

Don't carry your original passport around with you. Leave it in your cabin safe and do as Lyn suggests - carry a photo ID and a color copy of your passport picture page.

Thanks for the replies. I will be sailing on the SOS and the room we will be staying in don't have a safe. I will just keep them locked up in my suitcase.
I will only need it at the initial check in and check out through customs, right?

And I will make color copies of mine and my husbands just in case.

Thanks,
Tracy
