I've booked a Christmas Cruise for my family on the NOS leaving Dec 23 cruising the western Caribbean. We can't wait. I booked it last April. Not being a family that has done alot of traveling, I booked it through a friend's travel agent. No, I didn't check around, was just too excited to book and went ahead. Now, if it wasn't for these boards, I would know nothing. I booked, she took my money and haven't heard a thing. I probably wouldn't even notice except that some major changes have happened that I think she should have informed us about that I only know about because of these boards. Mainly the drinking age. I have 2 sons who are 19 and 21. Both have been drinking legally in Canada for almost 2 years. Now my 19 year old(almost 20 by the cruise) will not be able to have a drink. I really feel my travel agent should have informed us of this. We will be paid in full in the next couple of weeks. I'm not saying I would have cancelled, and this is just one thing I know about, but should it not be part of the job of a travel agent to keep their clients infromed of any rule changes?

A good T.A. should be able to answer any question or at least find the answer. You probably won't hear from her until your documents arrive. If you would have asked her about the drinking age she should have told you. She probably didn't think of asking you. Maybe you were just too easy of a sale for her. I think the legal drinking age has been the same for over a year.

Steph,
It would depend on whether you let your TA know that you were expecting your children to drink on the ship. Most TA's keep up with pricing, ticketing, and informing you of the changes in itineraries. It also depends on how many clients the TA has, I for one try to keep my clients informed of any changes, but unless I knew in advance that a drinking policy change would affect my clients I probably would not send the information to them. The closer it gets to the cruise, the more you will hear from the TA. Also, just pick up the phone and ask your TA any questions you might have about your upcoming cruise.

Thanks for your replys. I guess because she had the ages of my kids in detail I assumed she would think the information would be applicable. I'm a little frustrated because we were also paying for this in installments for our own sake and I had to remind her 3 weeks after a payment was to be processed to do it. Kind of defeated the purpose of it! I'm getting the impression she is not to on top of things. Live and learn. I would not use/recommend her again.

Senglish, my wife is a travel agent, but she is unique...lol...she is ****, and if someone comes in wanting to do something that she has never done before, she researches the hell out of it..This last year, a lady wanted to go to the Iditarod Race and she researched and researched and made tons of calls on it, to no avail cause the lady ended up cancelling...but some travel agents will go out of there way and some are just collecting paychecks....

S&C_06...next time I will contact you and get your wife's name and have her book my vacation! She sounds like a travel agent I'd get along well with! She has many very happy/lucky clients I'm sure.

Yeah she just doesnt like "stupid" people....Or so she says, but she is very on top of things..she actually works two jobs, one as a travel agent and another as a dispatcher at our PD. She is a workaholic and does it all!!! She just doesnt like people that call and ask how much would a cruise cost? And she is like to where? when? what company? People think that she can just give them a price right off the bat....But if you know what you want, she will be glad to help!

Hey that is what makes this job interesting. I find that NO QUESTION is a stupid question. In my years as an agent I find there are many people who know absolutly nothing about cruising and thats when I step in, to educate them, answer questions and help make their pre crusing expereince as stress free as possible. I tell all my clients that I am here for them and will answer any question they might have no matter how small and unimportant they might think it is.

Also I get those calls where people want to know how much a cruise is, thats when I qualify them based on their knowledge of cruising and their interests etc. The best yet is the call I received a while back from a woman who had a 7 day vacation coming up, she wanted to take a cruise to Hawaii from Myrtle Beach did not want to fly and was amazed when I told her that first there are no ports in Myrtle Beach, second she would have to fly to the west coast or all the way to Hawaii. She was upset because she wanted the package for around $300.00. She was serious, I took the time to educate her about the types of cruises that were available and I did not treat her as a stupid person, you can believe when she does get ready to cruise she will call me back and could be a client for life.

I am also a very busy agent, but each of my clients are treated as if they are my best friend, thats what keeps them coming back and also referring me to others.

Just my $.02.

CruiseSpecialist,
Let me just start off by saying you sound like the exact person ANYONE would want to deal with, I mean to think a potental clients questions are stupid is just not good people skills ( just in my opinion). Whomever coined the phrase no question is a stupid question, knew what was needed to be said for people who just aren't in the know. New cruisers have tons of questions as I have and thanks to this forum lots of them have been answered special thanks to folks like you, keep up the good work and hey maybe for my next cruise I can contact you.

Just to clarify, I never meant, if that is how it came off, that my wife treated these people as stupid people. But she does come home sometimes and vents to me. Believe me she is very professional. Her boss there or the people at the police department wouldnt have her working if she wasnt.
