Ok, here I go with my humble opinion...tipping is a part of a cruise. If you get to know the staff, you will understand they work very hard for very little. MY WAY is to start tipping early....hi, my name is, and I want this to be a great cruise for both uf us...$$$...I like things done a certain way, and this assures it every time ! I then tip based on service at the end of the cruise. I know tipping is a touchy subject, and others feel very differently. Please share......

We have learned to take a supply of $2 bills for those special occassions aboard ship when we feel that certain staff have gone the extra mile! We realize how hard the staff is working to make our cruises a joy and a pleasure and we take care of them as seems appropriate! The service with smiles has come back to us in many wonderful ways. And..yes we do give out envelopes at cruise end to those special staff!

I have always filled the envelopes at the end of the cruise with more than the recommended amount and sometimes hand out tips for exceptional service. I am still debating on the best way to do things. I have seen instances where early tipping led to worse service if you forget a tip. It is hard to know whether early tipping encourages good service more or whether the "mystery" of what will be in the envelope keeps them hopping all week. I have seen some folks do neither the early tipping or the envelopes and that really annoys me. I sure don't go for the automatic tip deduction being added to your bill though. So, I generally do both but reserve 95% for the envelopes.

We tip for drinks served at the time they are served, room service, if we ask for ice or something extra. At the end of the cruise, we leave the automatic tips on our bill and fill envelopes for those who deserve more. Almost always this includes the cabin steward, the waiters in the dining room, and the bar tenders we frequent. Sometimes, the maitre d'. I feel they deserve at least the standard fees, but almost always the staff goes above and beyond the basic services. So I guess you can say, we do both ahead and at the end. Basically, all the way through the cruise. I never ceases to amaze me how wonderful the staff is. There sometimes a sour grape or two, but normally they are wonderful.

I leave the tipping till the end for the room steward & waiters but I always give them cash since they really want cash. If you put their tips on the bill they won't see the whole amount since RC takes part of it. I tip my bartenders throughout the cruise and cash at the end.

The $2 bill trick works for us too...I've been doing this for years....plus I give my room steward a $20 bill the first day...works wonders if I should need anything extra plus it puts a smile on their face....and if the waiter is extra special, they get a $20 at the end of the cruise....PLUS the automatic tip that I pre-pay....Most of the crew works their butts off, and they do deserve any extra you can give them.
Just don't be a JERK and stiff them...and some do sorry to say....Happy cruising....

Hi Everyone,
Do you know for sure that the cruise lines take part of the tip we leave on our account. Do ALL the cruise lines do that?
If so, from now on we will have it taken off our account and give it to them at the end of the cruise in an envelope.
We do tip cash at the end of the cruise anyway, besides the tip that is left on our account.

I was told that RC does take part of the tip if not in cash and I have been told this more than once. They really do appreciate cash so I give that instead of putting it on the account. I have no idea what the other cruise lines do.
