Well we are back. I'll run through our experience..not many complaints with RCCL however the weather could have been more cooperative.

We drove to Greensboro Sat, night stayed overnight and took our flight out Easter Sunday morning. We were quite shocked Sunday morning when we got up to 29 degree weather. But hey- we are heading to Sunny Florida right? We fly down Sunday afernoon- no hitches at all- smooth sailing and my daughter adored flying (her first flight)

We arrived at a very nice hotel my hubby booked through Priceline..weather however was still cool- maybe 50. Went to bed early so we could arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed for our cruise. We are woken up at 11:30 to a fire alarm. We are thinking this is some kindof mistake- look out the balcony and ask other confused patrons what was up but everyone was confused. We finally hear- leave the building being hollered down the halls. We -for the first time ever -put our teenage sons in another room. They don't wake up...they have the keys- HUGE lesson learned there.... they finally wake as hubby is contemplating breaking their sliding glass door- as we neared the elevators- thinking the steps were there we could definately smell smoke- or something electric hot. I was scared. I hadn't been able to find my contacts so I was walking around blind. And couldn't find the steps and smelled smoke on the 6th floor of a hotel. Luckily we got out , waited in the parking lot for an hour before we were told without explaination to go back to our rooms. Hubby finally asked a fireman what was up -after getting a smart@ss comment from the hotel security guard--that it was an overheated AC unit. Needless to say I did not sleep at all that night. Huby complained to the front desk but was only offered an apology since we booked through Priceline.

Back to the cruise.

Embarkation- We arrived at 11:15 were on by 12. easy.pleasant staff.
Our room would be ready by 1 so we wandered and signed daughter up with Adventure Ocean..which was fantastic and she used much more than carnivals program.
We had lunch at Windjammer got a drink and drink card for our son and headed to our room.

Room: We had two rooms on the 4th level. We knew they would be small but they fit our needs. Our Room stewart was friendly- although we only got towel animals twice. And he didn't turn down our beds the last night.
The biggest complaint we had I was hoping wasn't true- but it does smell like sewer on that level all the time. It was stronger down the hall and we had to walk through there all the time. Our sons bathroom smelled like old urine too.
We got our bags soon after 1..very fast.

Food- We ate in Illusions every night and food and service was wonderful. OUr waiters had a great sense of humor and everyone on board spoke much better English than the staff at Carnival did. They never knew what you were talking about. The family with us had small children too and our daughter and their son became fast friends.

Ports: When we left Port Canaveral it was cold and light rain . Sailing out was the so rough even though the seas were calm. It was from the vibration of the ship all night. I was surprised thinking the RCCL ships would be smoother than the Carnival. The last night we were really bobbing in calm waters...never did figure it out.

CocoCay- was really nice- the first warm day..weather was great and I liked the safe feel of the island. My son and I took the nature walk- long be careful- but we saw tons of wildlife including a peacock that scared me to death at first. We did snorkeling (and I met a guy from my town- go figure- ) Hubby did kayaking and saw dolphins.

Nassau- We woke up Wednesday to Thunder, lightening, and heavy rain... They canceled our morning excursion but hubby and daughter got to do dolphins- which they loved. My sons and I walked around the straw market and spent the rest of the day on the ship. We had already been there once before. It cleared up for about an hour and then another rainstorm set in until we left.

Day at sea- was good sunny in the morning and evening but again we had rain and wind in the afternoon. Thank God for Adventure Ocean. We did the rock wall and picked photos and started packing.

The shows were ok..not wowed by any of them , skipped bingo- $55 a card. I did feel that RC nickeled and dimed us more than Carnival. Everything was a sell. Hubby went in for a short massage and came out and hour later with $255 worth of creams he didn't need. They sold all specials with a glass- which I didn't want to carry home on the plane... Carnival had $3 specials. I also did not realized that OJ at the bar would cost me $2.50 I thought OJ was free- what does it matter which level you get it on. THe bartenders response to my question was you didn't show me a card. SO I guess he thought I wanted to use my soda card and he wasn't going to let me use that either since I waited to show it.

Casino - We don't gamble much but I did put $2.00 in the quarter slots and won $25.

Overall it was a very nice cruise- Most of our complaints had nothing to do with RCCL other than the sewer smell. The staff and food was great.

I think RCCL was great continuity -wise. Everything was well orchastrated. All shows were at the exact time.... No delays or mishaps ... Even during emarkation and disembarking everything was very smooth. They started edisembarking at about 7:45 and we walked off at about 8 and were on the road by 8:30. Carnival was like a cattle drive.

Welcome back to reality. The best way to ease the pain is to book another cruise. I might suggest trying Princess the next time. I don't think you'd be disappointed at all. We've only been on the Sea, Sun, and Dawn Princess, but we've never encountered a sewer smell on board. The food and service is wonderful. True, they don't have the rock climbing, but their activities seem to keep the kids happy. It sounds like all and all you had a decent time. That hotel thing must have been really scarey. I have extended wear contacts, so I can see when I wake up. Otherwise, I'm blind as a bat. Thank you for your post. Best wishes and start booking that next cruise!!

what is on the 4th floor? are the junior suites on that floor? Why wouldn't RCC take care of that smell... I had a couple of questions for you... Was it busy on the ship, was there a lot of different age groups... I am looking for mid 20's... Also, how were the pool side (planned activities) since you had bad weather? Also, was there alot to do on ship? Did you get your money back for the excursions?

SOrry, Just wondering I am cruising the same ship in july and if it's not worth it I am changineg.

I hear there is a horrible smell and some flooding in the inside cabin's.We are taking a cruise in June 20 year ann. I am not getting very good reviews.I have already booked this cruise and paid for it as well. I am thinking of changing cruise lines they will keep a portion of what we have paid. We did cruise with Imagination 3 years ago this was our first cruise we had a wonderful time. I would like some other reviews on The Sevoreign Of The Seas Ship.

I've been on quite a few RCCL ships and only experienced an odor a couple of times on older ships. The smell wasn't all that bad and only in the hallway on lower decks. The suites are on the upper decks. My best advice to shelby is to try a "Voyager" class ship next. You will be in AWE!

Tipfam10, I had a great time on the Sovereign last September. I can't say enough about how great the staff was. I will definately cruise on her again. Oh yeah, welcome to Cruise-Chat!

We travelled Voyager with RCCL on the 8th deck/balcony...NO COMPLAINTS and we were fortunate enough to have great weather. You'll have better luck next time!
Book Again
I know with RCCL you can keep going on line to see the newest rooms available and switch from lower to a higher level...it'll be worth the additional $$$ (in my opinion)

Crowd wise- it was great. it sometimes felt like there were a few hundred people on board instead of the several thousand. The only time you noticed the people was on the pool deck on the day at sea (although there were more reserved lounge chairs than people..lol) and you could see all the people on CocoCay - but there was no problem- the island accomodating them all quite nicely.

Even on disembarkment we never saw throngs of people.

The fourth floor were regular rooms , Mirage Dining room and guest relations.

The smell was midship- seemed to be in the hall and someof the carpets looked like they had been wet at some time. It wasn't horrific but still a bit of a nuisance having to walk through the smell everytime we went to our room. I would think a company of that magnitiude could do something about it. I had heard complaints about it before so its not an isolated problem. I never smelled it on any other part of the ship.

There were lots of different age groups and people were very friendly. Lots of different types of bars/lounges that seemed to accomodate the older cruiser as well as upbeat lounges for the younger crowd.

The day at sea they did alot of poolside stuff, little games and contests- belly flop- ***y leg typestuff. At night there was always somthing going on up there and there were lots of night buffets/activities but we skipped most of those because we scheduled early excursions.

They announced the cancelled excursions early on that day and said we could take our tickets back to the desk for refund credit. i went about 10 minutes later and she said our account was already credited. it just got debited to our seapass. We scheduled them through RCCL and paid with the same credit card. Not sure how it went for others. We were pleased...the weather was horrible and we did not want to go out in it. So it worked out ok for us.

As far as the rest of the condition of the ship it was recently remodeled I think and it was in really good shape- I preferred the decor to Carnival hands down. They had a leak on night and it was rather amusing- it had been raining all day and the water was coming down through the Centrum where the steps are. So they had a step ladder on the steps with 8 Indian guys holding it up...with the piano and other musicians playing down below. Felt a little Titantic-"ish"

You'll enjoy yourself- we had a great time and will most likely go with RC again- I have to keep remembering it is a 20+ yr old ship.

Funny that some of you mention the sewer odor. We had it on Pride, near the Atrium. At first my husband and I thought maybe the food didn't agree with a passenger. After continually passing the same men's room, day after day, it was still there. Is there a holding compartment, perhaps, in certain areas of ships? That is the only answer we could come up with.
BTW Shelby, Is Cococay still as beautiful, especially where you're tendered in? Haven't been there in 10 years. Our first cruise with RCCL.

yes, its beautiful. We had great weather that day. My son and I went for a walk through a nature trail they put in..it runs out to an isolated beach barely anyone was one that was very shallow and looked like something from a picture postcard. We could hear all the iguanas scurrying when we got close- felt a little like Jurassic park when those little cute dinosaurs followed that guy.
We really enjoyed it.

I wish I knew why that smell seems to show up from time to time on ships as well. About a year ago I went on Grand Princess out of Galveston and there were a number of people complaining. I hadn't experienced it so I asked questions. Seemed it was on the two lowest decks so I went down and it wasn't a slight odor, it almost knocked me down when the elevator opened. I pitied the folks who had cabins booked for that sailing on the lower decks. Think I'd have slept on a lounge chair by the pool.

I did one of those tours of a ship once that they try to drag agents to, can't remember what line or ship. They blocked the stairwells to lower decks and asked that we remain on the upper decks. One of the carachters in our group defied the request and said it too smelled like an exploded septic system. Seems it happens from time to time but I think (hope) pretty rare.

I wonder what they do with all the waste, hope they're environmentally friendly. Imagine they'd have to be.

Cheers, Neil
