Speaking of upgrades, I had a client sailing last week who was fortunate enough to get upgraded from a D1 Guar balcony cabin to a Junior Suite. In my survey was a complaint about having to pay higher gratuities! There are some that you can just never figure or please.
I forgot about the guaranteed catagories. Still kind of rare to get a JS out of that. That cruise must not have had many diamond plus members in balcony cabins. To be that lucky, and then complain about paying a little more for tipping your cabin steward? The gall of some people. It irks me when I read about people like that.

HI Neil,Thanks for the information,as we are new to cruising do you normally have to ask for an upgrade or is it offered to you you when you board the ship.Rod
Rod, I hate to bust your bubble, but I had 30 cruises with Royal Caribbean before I got an upgrade. If you ask after you board the ship, the answer will be no unless you pay for the upgrade. I know your question was directed to Neil, but I've been there/done that.
