Hi yall,
I have heard and read that some cruisers are generous and tip extra to some staff like the cabin steward, waiter and assistant in the dining room, various bartenders, etc. Apparently these tips help the passenger to receice a little(or a lot) of extra attention. Is anyone familiar with this practice and how much would be enough and not insulting to the staff? Also, how does the staff know that you have prepaid gratuities and that we just didn't ignore the envelopes left for you on the last night? Thanks to anyone who can answer.

You will get a voucher sent to your room so that you can still give an envelope personally to your waitstaff, etc. on the last night. We like to give cash for anything extra we ask for, a couple bucks at a time same as you would any hotel with no gratiuty at the end. One cabin steward even repaired my daughter's formal night shoes! (we didn't ask--he saw they were broken and took them below decks--his theory in that melting pot of staff someone would know how to do it.) Friends of ours tip a bar waiter by the pool $10-20 the first day and they get first rate service on the deck and later in the theatre the rest of the week.

We usually tip $10-20 in cash to a bartender or bar waiter who gives excellent service during the first day or two of the cruise. On the last night we choose the one who most catered to our needs and they get a 50 dollar bill.
