What Carol said and most countries that require a passport want it to be valid for 3 to 6 months beyond your arrival date. Although since this is new to the Caribbean, whos knows what will go into effect.

And US Customs may get finicky (you never know with Customs folks) toward the last couple of weeks of the year, they may decide they want you to have a passport if you are coming back during the transition period.

Well... I hope they don't get too picky. I'm cruising Dec 15-18, which is pretty close to that Dec 31st deadline. We were assured that we would be fine with just our birth certificates. There are 34 of us going and some people have a couple of children (one lady has 6!).. passports could get pricey. Please post if you find that passports are definitely going to be required before the 1st of next year. Thanks!

It was supposed to have started January 1, 2006, however, they extended it to January 1, 2007. It may not happen, but then again, it may. We got ours when we got back last year, just in case. You will be fine with a birth certificate and your driver's licenses (for adults) until then. Have a wonderful time!!
