While Royal Caribbean's employees on Labadee are ok, I read this morning that 10 of the 50 Haitians who work on RCI ships are home on leave. Royal Caribbean has not been able to reach these 10 people yet.

I'm keeping a good thought for them in hopes that they're ok, as are their families.

It just seems that there have been more quakes reported in the last few days in and around the Caribbean and also in more of the poorer nations. Whats up with all this activity?
Lets pray that things quiet down all around.

RCI continues to bring relief supplies to Haiti via their port calls at Labadee. One thing I learned today is the cruise line is using it's ships to convey supplies from other islands to Haiti. For example the people and governments of St. Maarten/St. Martin have donated food and water. When RCI ships stop there and will heading on to Labadee later in the cruise, they are letting the supplies "hitch a free ride". This means St. Maarten doesn't have to charter a plane or cargo ship.

Also for those wondering: the Coast Guard evaluated the recently opened Labadee pier for use by cargo vessels and said it wouldn't work. The pier simply isn't designed for that type of vessel because of weight limits, size, etc. So really, the cruise ships are the only way to offload supplies at Labadee.

Can we as passengers when visiting Labadee bring supplies to donate? If so, can we pack our own supplies to donate, and would we just unload them when we dock the ship visiting the island? My friend and I would like to be able to bring things like: granola, sheets, first aid supplies, etc.

Relief supplies are palletized and categorized for efficient handling. They really can't accomodate passengers dropping off boxes of granola or bed sheets. The logistics just create a logjam and can be counterproductive.

The cruise line is accepting cash donations on the ship - you can even charge them to your account. This is the best way you can help.

I think a small snipit of RCI dropping off much needed supplies for Port-Au-Prince in Labadee on the national news would help to put all this controversy to bed. RCI is doing its part to help with this disaster through supplying the island, donating money, and now also giving the net profits from RCI's passengers back to the people of Haiti when they visit the island. Nicely done RCI !
