Sounds way to hard for me.... I like my vacations simple - I board, I go to breakfast, lunch and dinner without paying, I go to the show by walking in. (I don't even keep my cell phone turned on - it's for emergencies only.) I do hope that this Oasis thing is a novelty/niche act in the world of cruising and the other lines let RCI have all the fun of the logistics of it all. For those who enjoy the modern technologies, sounds like it could be fun for them....

Funny you should say that - many in the travel industry are saying Oasis/Allure will be a niche market. People will do it once and then move on. Others don't want to feel like they are on the starship Enterprise with interactive screens everywhere (over 400 on the Oasis), crew with handheld card readers at every turn, HAL9000-esque TVs in your cabin, etc. It could very well be the perfect cruise for those who don't really like the idea of experiencing the ocean. They are even going to have salt water in the ocean pool, but fresh water in all the other pools.

I have booked on the upcoming Allure of the Seas for late Sept.2011. It is a long way off and it gives me plenty of time to evaluate the reviews on the Oasis. I like the name "Allure" - I find it "alluring" like all great sirens of the sea!

These huge ships may only satisfy a certain spot in the cruise market but it'll be fun just to try something that huge!! As long as I can get my Nathan's hot dog on the Boardwalk I'm good to go!!

No word on that idea yet. I do know the Oasis won't have a Nathan's. It seems like such a natural hit, I don't understand why they didn't do it.

I remember the question about Nathan's came up before. At that time I thought I found information that the Oasis would have Nathan's hotdogs on the Boardwalk. Now though all I see is they have Nathan's in the Sea View Cafe's on the Radiance Class ships.

This is a coincidence. I was recently approached to be a partner in a Nathan's Franchise for the new Boardwalk in Myrtle Beach. I know this is being a Drifter, but it's such a weird coincidence I had to mention it.

The Oasis and Allure could end up being niche cruise ships. Nothing wrong with that. They'll probably have a market for them. I'm sure they have done studies to see how this concept will play before putting this much money into the development of it.

I agree with Susan though, it sounds complicated to me as well for a cruise vacation experience. I like to turn the gadgets off and un-complicate my life when I hear the magic words "Welcome aboard".

I think that having a "card" that can do it all is the way to go and keeping lines to a rare minimum is great. I don't like the idea of not having that receipt with POS paying and hope that they consider have one printed for our backup. We have to have the card with us, so why not make more use of it than just a scan for coming and going and for purchases. It certainly would not deter me from selecting RCI for my next cruise if it were on all ships.

I'm going to hold further judgment on the paperless system. I suppose the chance of errors is minimized when the waiter/clerk/bartender scans your card immediately instead of walking off with it such as on the pool deck when you order a drink. I think most errors happen when a bartender has several orders and the wrong cards are scanned. I've also seen them type in a folio number on the screen, instead of scanning the card. That is an error-likely situation.

You are supposed to be able to pull up all your purchases on your cabin TV for review, and they are supposed to be immediately viewable.
