Today and tomorrow RCI will be holding an online expo about the Oasis. I registered for it last month and just got the link in my e-mail. Anyway, a "surprise" announcement is going to happen this afternoon. Look here for the reports.

No earth shattering announcement...RCI is having it's next WOW sale October 6&7. 50% reduced deposits, up to $200 OBC, for new bookings for cruises starting 12/1/09. This includes Oasis bookings - but not for cruises between 1/1/10 through 3/31/10 on the Oasis.

When you reserve your shows online, your folio will be programmed with those show times. Sounds like you have to scan your card to enter the showroom at the appropriate time. You can change your plans by visiting the box office on the ship, or by your cabin interactive screen. All guests must show their cruise card to enter reserved seating shows.

Electronic mustering. Your cruise card will be scanned when you report to your muster station. Muster station numbers will be in large print on your cruise card. Life vests are all at the stations.

WOW phones will be available for renting. These are essentially smart phones with wi-fi that can be used like a cell phone aboard the ship - call others, call cabins, text message, check out menus, schedules, etc.

The cabin TVs are also internet portals.

Point of sale scanning for purchases eliminates paper receipts. I am going to ask more about that.

I really am going to miss those paper receipts - they are such a help to keep a lid on shipboard expenses and .. when and if there are any disputed items!! (It has happened !!)

Johnny Rockets will serve a diner-style breakfast on the Oasis - this is a first. No surcharge for breakfast, but they will have the usual fee for lunch and dinner service.

I spoke to the person heading the company providing the phones to RCI a few months ago. He was conducting a mini-focus group, telling people who stopped by his trade show booth how much they're thinking of charging, and asking if they'd pay that and how much a service like this would be worth to them.

It'll be interesting to see what price they decided on.

Oasis mantra among the RCI management: "No Lines". To that end they encourage booked guests to do as much as possible on-line, which will include reserving restaurants, shows, signing liability waivers, etc. That way you show up, they scan your card, it shows you are good to go, and...you go on to whatever venue it happens to be.

The cruise card is always important but it has a new significance on the Oasis. It is more than just your room key and shipboard credit card.
