getting in touch w/home

My husband & I will be on a 4 night cruise in Oct celebrating our 15th anniversary. We will be leaving our kids w/their g-parents. I know they will be well taken care of, but would like to call home 1 time a day just to check in. What is the best, least expensive way to do this.

About the only way you can call from the ship is on your cabin phone and the cost is about $9.00 per minute. Same if your family calls you. My daughters husband had a medical emergancy on their honeymoon cruise and my daughter ran up a $500.00 bill and so did we. Unfortunately my son-in-law eventually died and NCL still made her pay the bill. So unless it is an emergancy I would not recommend it. Depending on what ports you visit it may be cheaper to call on shore but be careful that too can become expensive.

Also consider emailing home as that will only be about $1.00 per minute. A daily email from home should suffice.

On my last cruise in May on The Empress of The Seas, I was able to make and receive calls from home every day throughout the cruise (even at sea!). We tried to keep the calls short, and it only added about $50 to my regular Cell bill (I have Verizon ) There was a 1-2 second delay while at sea, but it was fun!

I'm not sure where you're going, but for what this is worth: Verizon Wireless (and probably other cell phone providers also) has crystal clear cell reception to Cabo San Lucas from Los Angeles (and probably other cities also).

Why wouldn't you expect to have to pay the $500.00 bill regardless of whether or not the person died? You received a service for the price (although quite expensive)and should accept it without question.

We will be going to CocoCay and Nassau. Email is fine...does anyone know the price of using the internet? Anyone had experience in texting using AT&T cell phone? What about buying a calling card once we're in Nassau? How easy is it to use/find a phone?

Yeah good question...I was curious on this one too- my 6 yr old will be home with her g-parents for the week. We have Verizon Wireless. If we bought a calling card here at home would it work in the Caribbean at a payphone or something??
Anyone else think $9 a minute is just uncalled for??? Wow!! JMO
