They can. It depends on your carrier. You will be picking up signals from the ships satellite and you could have hefty roaming charges.

Thank you. My local carrier said they would not work because there aren't any towers in the ocean! I don't have roaming fees so I'll also check with them regarding those fees.

I cruised with carnival and my phone worked every once in a while but my charges where crazy i made 2 called to check in with me dog sitter and was charged over 70$!! i would make sure with the phone company first. plus your on vacation leave the phone off!!!

Oct 2007 I used our phone ( AT&T )on the way back from Hawaii to change our flight and was charged 3.50 per minute roaming charge. It was connecting thru the ship.

I didn't plan on using my cell but if we have an emergency at home I needed to know if the kids would be able to reach us.
