Tulum Excursion

We are sailing on RC Grandeur of the Seas at the end of the month. We registered for the Tulum excursion at the Cozumel port. The excursion leaves Playa del Carmen. The Tulum excursion sounds interesting but it appears that there may be a lot of traveling involved. Has anyone done this excursion, and can you tell me if this is mainly riding on a bus with only a short visit at the ruins?

Tulum ruins sounds interesting, but there are other things we would rather do if the 6.5 hour excursion is mostly transportation. Any recommendations?

We went on the Tulum excurison exactly one year ago. It takes approx. 45 min.-1 hr. each way. Think we had a box lunch on the way. "Nachos" was the tour guide, who was very energetic and informative, talking to us all the way there. One stop on the way allowed us to do shopping in ai local gift shop.

After arrival, walked past other shops, and option to walk to ruins or catch tram for small fee to the ruins. We opted to walk with continuous historical info. While @ Tulum, we spent approx. 1.5 hrs there. You can walk around or stay w/guide. After catching tram back to shop area, we shopped for a few minutes. After ferry brings you back, you have approx. 1.5-2 hrs. we ate at a local restaurant, shopped quickly and caught a taxi back to ship.

If you go, please tell Nachos, "Alabama" and his wife said "Hello" and we wish him well! Have wondered about him, after hurricane season. If you are able to share his contact info. and a pic of him, please send to my e-mail address and inform you have done so on cruise-chat. Somehow we missed taking a picture of him, and would love to have for reminiscing the great trip.

If you go way back on some chats on this site (probably Nov 2004-Jan 2005, there are recommendations for a few good restaurants in Cozumel. We went to one of those recommended restaurants as soon as the boat/ferry landed after Tulum. We had to walk through a really nice shopping area in a store, to get to the restaurant in the back. Their food was really good.
