I'm going on a cruise on Enchantment of the Seas in August. Can you pay for things on the ship (drinks, etc.)with cash? Or do you HAVE to set up an onboard account where you are billed at the end of cruise either on your credit card or using cash?
Except for the casino, cruise ships pride themselves on being a "cashless" society. When you check in they will ask you for a credit card - you can, however, pay cash at the end of the cruise if that's what you want to do. Some cruise lines accept personal checks.
Yeah what we usually do is just give cash up front to the onboard account, mostly just for the tips, because we hardly spend any money on the ship,we spend our money mostly at ports and we pay for our excursions before the cruise.
Some cruise lines will require a hefty deposit to your onboard account when you board, if you want to set it up with cash. If you prefer to pay cash, you can set it up with a credit card at the beginning, then pay it off with cash the night before you disembark (or very early the morning you leave the cruise). Expect long lines at the purser's office during that time.
Karen,
Hello, if we set up our account from the start with a credit card, will we still have to wait in the long lines the night before we leave the ship? Or will it just be charged to our credit card automatically?
Thanks,
Linda

It will be automatically charged to your credit card. In the early morning hours on the last day they will slip a bill under your door with all your charges for the week, check it out and if it seems correct, then you do not have to do anything else, unless you plan on paying the charge off with cash.
