We will docked on Maui for two days and one night. We would like to go to the 'Old Lahaina Luau' the night of May 9th. RCI doesn't show an excursion for this. How hard will it be if we book the Luau ourselves and find transportation to and from the ship?

Shouldn't be a problem but make plans to be back to the ship with plenty of time to spare before departure time. You don't want to take chances, the ship will not wait if your transportation has a flat, is running late or breaks down. Have an alternate plan should such thing go wrong. A cell phone and number of a local taxi service would be a good idea as a back up.

Neil, Thank you so much for the infor! Our ship stays in port overnight the 9th and doesn't leave until 11p.m. the 10th so shouldn't be a problem getting back on time(good thing in case we have a few too many fruit punches). Will there be taxi stands close to where we dock or tender? Or would we be better off renting a car for the day? It is sooo comforting to have cruise gurus such as yourself to help the baby cruisersThanks again!!!

There will be taxis at the pier but I think I'd line up a rental car if you're getting an overnight stay so you can explore multiple things during your stay. An overnight is a treat on a cruise. On the other hand if you do plan on indulging in a lot of the punch at the luau, the cab might be a better idea.

Cheers, Neil

That particular Luau is very very popular so you should make a reservation ASAP. The last time we were in Maui was for a week and that Luau was sold-out every night.

I totally agree with Hank, when we were in Maui for a week, it was the most popular and by far the most authentic Luau on the islands. Try to see the sun rise at Mt Haleakla if you can, it is breath taking (bring something warm as you may even see your breath) views.

Sue We did that cruise this past Oct...great cruise !! We was going to do the Luau at Lahaina but changed our mind and went to the Luau at Honolulu. It was great. It was at a Sea Park and got to see several shows before the luau.People we talked to on the ship said the luau at Lahaina was not that good and after telling them about our's,they said they wish they would have went to the one we went too.
Maybe this will help.

Mike, Thanks so much for the information on the Luau. We are staying extra days on Oahu after we disenbark and that may be the best idea instead of the one on Maui-Being our first trip to Hawaii, we may need to stay with the excursions offered.

Sue We booked our Luau thru RCCI on line before we sailed. Picked us up at the boat and took us to the luau, about a 45 min ride and returned us to the ship.
