You probably tried to use the "HTML code" version of the ticker (they are called tickers)
Go to the cruisetickers.com site, create your ticker and then copy the "BB Code" text it provides and paste it into your signature block in your profile information. Then after your cruise is over you can delete the text from the signature and the ticker goes away.
