Barbados is the best out of the 3 you have listed. If it were me, I'd get certified before cruising, but that is because I am and know what can happen when diving. To me, they don't give you enough instruction to handle emergency situations through the short course they give you. But if that's what he wants to do, make sure he stays with the dive master when they do their dive. In another post you mentioned St. John, did you mean Antigua and not the island of St. John. If you meant Antigua, disregard the Trunk Bay suggestion, Trunk Bay is on the island of St. John. If you're not going to St. John the island, for Antigua I'd suggest looking for Scott Taylor's post in the Caribbean Port Chat section. I believe they went to Pineapple Beach and had a great time. We did a snorkel trip there and had clear water BUT thousands of jelly fish. I don't like having to fight jelly fish while trying to snorkel. The catamaran we took stopped at 2 snorkel spots, both full of jelly fish and then stopped at a beach for swimming. Thankfully the beach area had no jelly fish. The catamaran was nice and the crew was great, but it was not good snorkeling to me because of the jelly fish. The water was great, the reefs were pretty, and there were lots of colorful fish, but having to fend of the jelly fish ruined it. Scott Taylor on the other hand had a great time and if I went back to Antigua, I'd be checking it out. Best wishes!
