Hey everyone!
I have a full page certified birth certificate issued right after I was born that I will be using for my documentation. I know that this birth certificate will work because It was the one i used several years ago for my NCL cruise. HOwever my girlfriend recently(last year) had to amend her birth certificate because her middle name was mispelled. They sent her a new certificate, but its only the size of a card and I am not sure if this is the right birth certificate. The people from the records office said in order for her to get a full page certificate which displays what hospital she was born in and all that good stuff, that she needed to write to the state records office. So my question is, do yall think that this birth certificate will work? It has her name and DOB and what state and county she was born in and her *** on the card. Let me know what yall think!

Cruise lines require an official BC (with raised seal) for identification. I would suggest she apply for an "official" BC. However, when and where will you be cruising? Right now birth certificates are sufficient, but before long cruise lines will be requiring passports.

Justin -

Nancy is right - the B.C. must have a raised seal from the issuing state. When my family was preparing for our cruise (Enchantment in August) we discovered that my wife only had a Birth Announcement from the hospital - not an official Birth Certificate. If you go to the states online site, you can probably find directions for getting a certified B.C and it will probably only cost you $10 and takes 3-4 weeks depending on the state. Better to be safe than sorry.

But Nancy's question about when you are traveling is critical. During different stages of 2006, the State Department is phasing in requirements of Passports for areas that use to only require B.C. (i.e Caribbean and Canada).

Okay here is the deal, I called Customer Service today and the gentleman told me that as long as it was a Birth Certificate issued by the State then it was acceptable. Here in South Carolina, there are two types: The Short Form BC and a full page BC which are issued from the State. If you want a long form copy then you have to write to the state records office. So I am thinking that the Short form BC will work according to the info i got today, what do yall think?

Hi Justin,

My old state, Massachusetts, had issued a short form for my mother. This short one had a raised seal as well so it worked just fine. If you don't have the seal, you may have trouble. If you need a quick birth certificate, try:
This is where I sent away to get a birth certificate for my mother. I was able to complete it online and received the certificate in five days. They were recommended by my travel agent and it worked great. I hope you enjoy your cruise!

Justin - The raised seal is the key. My TA and my travel documents for my cruise in August both mentioned that the certificate had the raised seal. If the short form has it, your fine. If not, you better get a new one - it is simple as that.

If you have any doubt, pay the $10 or so that VitalCheck will charge you to get a good certified copy. You don't want to be left on the dock watching the ship pull away without you.

The wallet size birth certificate that you received from SC will work just fine. Since I live in SC and most of my clients are from SC we have run into this numerous times. SC does not issue a birth certificate with the raised seal any longer, it just has to state somewhere on the certificate that it is a certified copy and have the seal on it. I have travelled with many people from SC who were issued the credit card size birth certificates and they are not a problem.
