exchanging money

We are going to Cozumel and Belize this Christmas. I'm assuming we can only spend Mexican currency?(Pesos?) How do we know where to get money exchanged, what is the exchange like? How on earth do you begin deciding how much to exchange?

Will we need to do this each place?

Pesos won't necessarily work in Belize since it is a separate country. But in reality dollars are perfectly fine in both Mexico and Belize as far as the places you will be able to access from a cruise ship. There is no need to exchange money.

But bear in mind that while they will gladly accept dollars, you may get change in the local currency. If this happens to me, I usually find an excuse to buy something that uses up the local currency before I return to the ship.
