Cruising on Serenade of the Seas over Labor Day. Any suggestions for shore excursions in Juneau or Ketchikan? There are so many to chose from. We're taking the train ride in Skagway.

In Juneau I'd recommend either some kind of wildlife (whale/sea otter etc.) excursion, or a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier. You may find an excursion that combines the two. In Ketchikan, some good options might include Saxman native village, where you may be able to see artisans creating totem poles, as well as a display of old poles, or Totem Bight State Park, which has totem poles and a winter lodge for the Tlingit tribe. In town (walkable) there is Creek St., which is a boardwalk above the water, and a nice Alaska visitor center with some good displays & dioramas depicting wildlife, native culture, etc.

If your budget can stand it, do a helicopter landing on Mendenhall Glacier. It is a very memorable experience. You can book one off the ship for around $185 or so per person. It isn't often you get to take a hike on a glacier.

In Ketchikan, do a float plane trip to Misty Fjords with a remote lake landing. Again it is very memorable and well worth the money. This will set you back around $175 per person, or so.

Be sure to read the shore excursion reviews at http://www.AlaskaPortReviews.com. This might help quite a bit.

Have a great cruise.

Tom
