Royal Caribbean has given the heave-ho to it's originally secretive and then "outed" viral marketing ploy, called the Royal Champions. We famously called them the Royal Chumps in this forum. I feel a sense of well-being in the knowledge that our little forum played a role in exposing this group and getting the word out.

According to a USA Today article by Gene Sloan, "Royal Caribbean's new senior vice president for marketing, Betsy O'Rourke, sent an email this week to participants in the Royal Champions program that said the line is shutting it down." You can read the full article here (scroll down to it)

hmmm "New Senior VP of Marketing" wonder if the "old Senior VP" is now enjoying retirement??

The bad publicity could not have been good for the career.

If they want to have Champions for Royal Caribbean, at least use the people who have supported them throughout the years. People who have actually sailed with them!

It's about time! I wonder how many loyal customers went to other cruise lines because of that little group? I almost did.

Sonny, I know you know this...I certainly do...but Royal Caribbean didn't need to resort to this type of marketing ploy. They have a great cruise product and legions of happy, loyal passengers (like you and me). It was an incredibly stupid thing to do. I do hope the manager responsible was fired. Bonus points if she was frog-marched out of the building with security mocking her.
