Some will say 'oh, it's just $5' but they need to look at the cost for a family for a week-long cruise. We leave on the Allure in a couple of weeks. I've never been one to spend a lot of money on the extra-fee dining, but for this cruise I did book three different dinners. Fortunately I made the reservations last week, before the price increases. If I had waited, those same dinners would now cost me $45 more. For those who teeter on the edge over the extra-fee dining that can be a deal breaker.
I realize food prices are going up and I'm sure that is the excuse RCI will use. But given their volume purchases I have to wonder about it.
They're getting as bad as the airlines with the extra fees. I've never been a fan of the pay extra restaurants. It's like nails on a chalk board when I read "Oh, it's well worth the extra cost." That only encourages the cruise lines and enforces that they can get away with it.
Even tho I live kinda close to Chicago, where there are many fine restaurants to pick from, I almost never drive that far; too much time and money spent getting there, too expensive to park and then eat, etc., so I looked forward to, once each cruise, trying something different. We loved Chopps, but the price IS getting close to "forget-it" levels. When it usually takes me almost a whole year to pay for one trip, and of course after I make my normal ship's fuel deposit in the Casino, I'd rather spend the extra money on a bigger cabin or a land excursion we haven't done yet, as opposed to another great steak, etc. Since I already have an "Outback Steak House" palate, I can go there more often, and instead, stick to the usually Great Food in the dining room. It just seems too bad............
Well, Dave, I guess we've just figured out why the prices have gone up. However, thinking like that by the cruise line only gets people like you and I to re-consider the expense, and, in the end, they loose money. Not being a big drinker, they sure loose money on my wife and I with the high cost of a simple mixed drink too. I'll stick with Iced Tea and a can of coke, and Windjammer and the dining room.
