Splendour Of The Seas Will Feature iPads In Each Cabin
This is huge news. Each cabin will have an iPad that can be used for free shipboard info, as well as for accessing the internet (not free). I am a big fan of my iPad. Press Release.
I’m also a big fan of the iPad and began bringing mine instead of my laptop last year. I can see it really being a great tool for the passengers while onboard. I’m curious as to how they will handle the liability of having one in each room. Is it going to be tethered? How will they verify that it is in working operation before you disembark?

Passengers will be able to roam the ship with the iPads. I imagine they will have theft prevention devices on or in them. I would not be surprised if the cabin attendants gather them up on the last evening so they can be checked for operability/abuse.
We'll no doubt hear more about this as far as the rules and liability issues.
This will be interesting to see how RCI goes about this once the time comes. If passengers are allowed to roam the ship with them, then I would think there would be some kind of anti-theft device on them, so passengers can't take them off the ship in port.
I too, like my iPad. It was a lifesaver so to speak in October when we had that snowstorm. We were without power from about 7:00 pm that Saturday night to 1:30 am Monday morning. Our iPads were charged, and we had a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that we were able to use.

I don't see this as a good thing. First, it's a big expense. I know RCI is hoping people will use these to watch "pay for movies", and they're hoping people will spend more on internet minutes. I see these as a big pain though. I can just see the people sitting around the pool with the volume up too high watching a movie. I also see people walking around with their nose stuck in these things as they block the elevators, stairwells, etc. And let's not even start to mention the intrusion at the dinner hour. RCI says this will enhance the cruise experience, I don't think so.
