Newport News gets occasional refurbishment work for cruise ships. I think they did a couple Carnival ships in the recent past. Austal in Mobile, Alabama, is building one of the two versions of Navy 'littoral' combat ships. They also did some overhauls of cruise ships recently.

Drydocks that can hold the larger cruise ships are not too numerous, which is why when the Oasis has to eventually go in for an upkeep about the only place in the U.S. that could hold it would be the aircraft carrier drydocks at Newport News. I spent 15 months there on the Nimitz in 1982-84. The place covers several square miles along the waterfront! Drydock #12 is over 2000 feet long.

The Pride of America is the only American registered cruise ship. She started to be built in Mississippi and was finished in Germany. It would be great if one of the cruise lines would build a ship here--we definately have the facilities.

Talking Ship Building
SonnyV; Maybe there is a company in the US that can design a ship's toilet that doesn't sound like it's going to suck your butt down the drain if you don't get up fast enough?!?!?

We had regular restroom-style flush toilets in the Navy and of course older ships had them. I don't know what pushed the vacuum style commodes into common use. We never had a problem with ours and we used seawater for the system.

To get back to Daves post about the names for the Quantum Class ships I've just seen mentioned that RCI actually registered 6 trademarks as names for new ships.
They are: Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Passion of the Seas,
Ovation of the Seas, Vantage of the Seas & Pulse of the Seas.
This is not official and I guess it still has to be confirmed by Royal Caribbean.

Yes, they did this a few weeks ago. At the time speculation was they registered multiple names since the final two choices had not been selected, or they had already selected the names and just threw some others into the mix to keep people guessing.

Frankly I am not crazy about any of them.

I wonder what they're thinking of when they made these decisions. I don't like any of the names either.
