I've been following Captain William Wright's daily video updates as the ship makes the transit from Europe to Fort Lauderdale. Today they are encountering the typical rough weather of the Bay Of Biscay. Captain Wright reports 50 to 60 knot winds and seas at 30 feet or more. He says the ship is riding well and at least from the video it doesn't look like it's rocking around that much. You can see it here. Today's video update shows the ship doing a little more pitching than yesterday. 60 mph winds with gusts at hurricane force and seas up to 49 feet according to the Royal Caribbean facebook entries. As a result, Captain Wright has turned the ship into the waves and slowed to 6 knots since this minimizes motion. I guess you can say this is really a "shakedown" cruise.
RCI has just announced that because of the rough weather encountered by the Oasis the ship will be 2 days late. Arrival at Fort Lauderdale will now be on November 13. The delay will not impact any of the preview cruises or other festivities.
According to Richard Fain's blog, weather is still a problem with the Oasis transit. Some waves have been at 60 feet along with 70 mph winds. Amazingly, the ice skaters have been able to rehearse.
Wow! 60 foot waves! I'd like to see the videos of that. When I was in the Marines and crossing the Pacific from LA to Japan we hit 40 waves. Just about all the Marines were sick. I don't think any of us will ever see 60 waves on a cruise.
