On November 1st I will go on my very 1st cruise. It will be onboard Royal Carribbean's "Sovereign of the Seas".

My Questions are: What night will they have the so-called Formal Night a.k.a. "Captain's Dinner"? Also, what should I wear (I am male)?

I have read the "Guest Vacation Documents" booklet I have recently received in the mail from Royal Carribbean. Inside there is an offer from R.C.'s Tuxedo Rental program. Offering different stlyes and colors of tuxedos to rent for the Formal Night (a,k.a. Captain's Dinner). So...Will it be necessary for me to wear a tuxedo for the Formal Night? If so, should I rent one from this program? If not, can I simply bring one of my suits from home?

I would especially appreciate reading a reply from someone who recently sailed on the Sovereign of the Seas (or similar R.C. ship) and observed what other men were wearing on the Formal Night. Were most of them wearing tuxedos? Less formal suits and ties? Or even something more casual?

Since I have never been on a cruise, I do not know what to expect, especially with regard to the Formal Night (Captain's Dinner). I would feel very uncomfortable if I was either overly dressed or under dressed.

I would appreciate any advice on this matter. Thank you in advance.

Most 7 day cruises have 2 formal nights.
The Captains Welcome is usually the day after you arrive. The Farewell Dinner is usually the second to the last night.
You do NOT need to rent a tux, a suit is fine.
Certainly there is a mix of men wearing tuxedos & those wearing suits. Go with what you are most comfortable with.....ENJOY!

Frase; I would not rent a tux, since this is your first cruise if you have a suit at home take it, make sure you like cruiseing before you go spending a lot of money on a vacation. But if you like to dress up whenever possible and you wanna tux you can buy them on the internet for $99.00 all you have to provide is socks and shoes. I was on my 5th cruise bedore I finally bought a tux. I bought mine because thats part of the fun is dressing up, its just a big fasion show. But it sees IMO that in the last few years more and more tuxs are showing up on cruiseships. But I would not rent one for $75.00 when a few bucks more will buy you one.

Frase, I have been on several cruises, including (most recently) Royal Caribbean. At the Captain's Dinner, I would say most men were in suits, with a large minority in tuxes. Randy makes a good point - if you will feel more comfortable in a tux, then buy one rather than rent, as you will then have it for other occasions (including additional cruises)! But a suit will be just fine. Failing that, if you have a sport coat and slacks that match, that will work too.

Have a great time!

I was just on my first ever cruise last week - Mariner of the Seas, seven-night cruise.

All I had on for the formal night was a sports coat, white shirt, and Dockers. Most of the people I saw were in suits tho, with a couple in sports coats like me. I was told a sports coat and Dockers would be fine for the formal night, so that's what I brought. I really didn't like dressing up. Every night right after dinner I ran back to my room and put my shorts back on, then headed to the casino!

I was on Sovereign last April and Formal night is the night you are in Nassau. THe captain's champagne reception is before dinner in one of the Lounges. You will be just fine wearing a suit as most did. Sovereign compass here http://community.webshots.com/album/137199732fpUvCd Have a great cruise.
