Hi,
I am going on my first cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on the Navigator of the Sea on Saturday, Sept 11. I have been trying to get a base tan going before heading to sea, but have not had much opportunity. I have been contemplating a tanning package at the local tanning salon. Should I do that or save the money towards cocktails or something to do while on the ship?

If you plan on spendig lots of time by the pool (on days at sea) and on the beaches, having a base tan will enable you to enjoy yourself quite a bit more than if you are subject to burning. Be surte to take plenty of spf 45 and lip block as well.
I love my time at the pool and like to log as many hours as possible catching rays. Since I live in Cleveland, where the sun shines only occassionally, I always get my base at local tanning salon. Purchase a limited package - just enough to give you a start and as Tom suggested, make sure to use a sunscreen with a high SPF Factor (Of course that is my advice - anyone who knows me is aware that anything above 15 is not in my possession - but I tan at my own risk).

Most places will sell you either, X amount of minutes, a set number of tans, or if you have to just join for 1 month. I always tan before i go on a trip, and i have been to salons that have various combinations of packages. I like 2-3 times a week for the 2-3 weeks before i leave. That gives me a great base, i say go for it.
