Do we need to keep our passports with us when we are in ports ? Do we just use it once getting on the ship ? We are on The Mariner of the Seas on the western Caribbean run ?

After you have boarded the ship, you can lock your passports in your safe. They will not be needed to get off and on the ship at the ports. However, I suggest you make copies of your passports and carry those with you. If there is any kind of emergency, you miss the ship or some other unforeseen event arises, it can be used for identification purposes.

I totally agree with Nancy's advice and urge everyone to make a color copy of your passport, driver's license, emergency contact and insurance information and have it laminated so that you can carry it with you at all times while ashore. It will prove very valuable if you ever need it for any emergency.

As of this moment a certified birth certificate, along with your driver's license are enough to get you on board. So, if you are sailing within the next couple of months you will be fine. BUT, there are rumors afoot that sometime in the very near future that passports will be required by cruise lines, no matter what your ports of call. If you have time before your cruise I would urge you to invest the time and money to get a passport. Besides, they make traveling SO much easier.
