Purchasing shore excursions

Has anyone ever purchased shore excursions online and not through the cruise line? I have researched a few on Aruba (ie DePalm jeep tour) and it looks like the identical tour for much less money than the cruise line charges. I am wondering about pick up and drop off from cruise line or is the tour within walking distance?

Yes we have purchased tours not through the cruise line and the thing you need to be acutely aware of is that if the tour isn't back at the ship and you are not on one of their tours, they pull away. We are going to Aruba as well in two weeks and purchased one during the day not through the cruiseline and the evening one through Royal to be sure that we make the ship on time.

What did you do about insurance? How were you covered in case you rear-ended another Jeep or something?
