I am not sure if they will cover any longdistance costs of calls made from the ship; they will not cover the satellite charge (the $8/minute or whatever the cruise line charges for phone calls.) Your best opportunity to use the cards will be in the ports - but you need to make sure that the card you purchase will work in the ports where you want to use it.

I purchased one through a travel insurance company for a trip to Europe a few years ago, and have been happy with it - they have different rates for different countries, and the card is "reloadable," so I have kept it as a backup for any trip.

as the cost for ship-to-shore calls is added to your onboard account, I don't think it is possible to use pre-paid phone cards. I have not seen them listed as an option to pay for calls on any of the ships I have been on. They will likely work ashore in the ports of call, however.

Be warned that Royal Caribbean has very high fares for ship-to-shore calls in the range of US$ 10 per minute - at least that's what they charge on their European itineraries.

It does not matter if you have a pre-paid card on the ship you will still pay the ship phone charges, like one poster said something like $10 a minute. We also found in the ports of Grand Caymen, Cozumel. Jamica. the pre-paid phone cards would not work in the phones there that we took with us. We tried in every one of these ports.

I have found that whenever I travel outside of the US, it is much easier and more advantageous to just purchase the phone cards that are sold in whatever port I am in. I purchase the smallest denomination possible (unless I know I can use it in other ports on the cruise) and have never had trouble reaching home at minimal cost.
