We are on the Legend of the Seas in the Med in a few weeks time.

Does anyone know what the on board currency is? I know most costs go on the Seapass, but am specifically wondering whether I need Euros, Dollars or Sterling for the Casino, tips etc.

You will need dollars.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

However.. just picked up our tickets and it says that they have now changed things so that the onboard currency will be GBP. Having checked with RCI this includes the casino where all the slot machines have been converted.

Not sure whether this just applies to cruises out of the UK or all European based cruises.

i am sailing on the voyager out of barcelona,
you mean to tell me the casino takes british pounds of all things? not dollars or euros?

Cruise Fanatic 05-10-2006 07:25 AM

Wow, that seems extreme for them to convert all the slot machines considering this ship was out of Tampa all winter and will probably go back to the Caribbean after the Europe season. I've never seen that on any of my cruises. Glad you found out direct though. Good Luck in the casino.

I have just come back from Legend's first cruise out of Southampton and can confirm that everything on board is charged in British pounds. The exchange rate isn't brilliant. Here is an extract from my review:
The translation from RCCLís normal dollar prices to pound sterling prices for Legendís UK summer season was a far from generous $10 = £6.50 in the shops, which is 1.54 dollars to the pound when the exchange rate is currently in the mid 1.80ís.
Wine seems to suffer an even worse exchange rate comparing identical wines on Celebrity Summit in the US e.g. a $24 bottle of Californian Beringer White Zinfandel becomes an £18 bottle which is only 1.33 dollars to a pound. I canít comment on other drink prices.

I can confirm this applies to the Legend sailing out of Southampton, UK. For the duration of the Summer months.

I have no idea whether Voyager or Brilliance both of whom I believe sail direct from Barcelona, would use Sterling. I would think mostly probably not, and that these ships would use Euro's as their on board currency. Since the vast majority of passengers on board would be European. Maybe someone could let us know....
