We are going to the old fortress excursion and I was wondering if there is alot of stairs and walking on this tour? I was wondering also if it wheelchair access?

Yes and yes. Being an old fort, there are some stairs so a wheel chair would not be able to go everywhere. BUT since it was a cannon based fort, they have ramps everywhere that were put in place to allow the cannons to be rolled between the fort's levels, so (while they may be pretty step) a wheel chair can see a good chuck of the fort.

Yes, its all walking. In fact you can walk to te fort from the ship (its less than a mile)

Does the tour guide start at the boat or do we take the bus to the fort?

well as I remember " El morro" is not wheel chair friendly but is not that difficult either
you will do a little walking but is not that hard but you will have to get use to it since Old San Juan is "peatonal" so most streets are close to taxis, because of their cultural value
I have made a few recomendations on some of my old post if you need help please let me know...

Why dont you try the amphybius tour of old San Juan?
Is near the port of carnival destiny, a little far from the Aventure of the seas, as for all I know you can tour Old San Juan first by bus and after that you just travel using the same bus as a boat on the San Juan bay...

I was at El Morro last Feb and they were installing an elevator...don't know if it's up and running yet or not...But there is considerable walking...a long walk just to get from the taxi or bus.....If you decide to walk from the ship..it's UP HILL all the way...There are many levels to the fort and some where not Wheel chair friendly...but it's a wonderful tour and some great picture taking opportunities...Have a Great Trip...

Well the elevator is new for me...
but I am little worried it can destroy the cultural value of the "El morro" with this kind of modifications,
I can only say the the adventure is a little far from it so either way maybe is better to try other things check this link maybe it will help:
