Western carribean cruisers needs passports for select ports

Hello everyone First time poster here.
We are scheduled to go on the Legend for a western carrib cruise in early March.
Upon checking on getting a passport for future trips, the postal officer told us that new laws require a passport for BELIZE, which is one of the ports of call.
When I called RCL they knew nothing about this and gave me the customs number to verify this. Well after being on hold with customs for 20 minutes, they told me that a passport is now required for Belize.
So I call RCL back to "enlighten" them and suggested that they tell passengers about the new requirements, and all I get is attitude from the RCL rep!
What is up with that?
This is my 2nd cruise with them and I have never been met with unpleasantness before!
After all, I just did the legwork for them!
Bottom line- get the passport- and doublecheck your arrangements.
I am looking forward to my cruise, but this just left a sour taste in my mouth.

With the exception of cruise ship passengers, all visitors to Belize must present a valid passport before entering the country. Please note that driver's licenses and birth certificates are not approved travel documents and cannot be used to enter the country. Passports must be valid up until time of departure.

Many countries do not require passports for cruise ship passengers as you will not be staying overnight.
