College Fjord Port Guide

Enchanting and majestic, five tidewater glaciers compose what is known as College Fjord, found in Prince William Sound in Alaska. Already popular as a tourist destination, the port has now become a Cruise Ship destination. College Fjord is aptly by a group of Ivy League Colleges adventurers.

College Fjord port can be accessed through the nearest port of Valdez which has its address of Valdez, Prince William Sound, State of Alaska, United States of America. This port is found in the Southern part of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System within the deep fjords of the region. The Port of Valdez is a port of call of the Alaska Marine Highway System and can be accessed from the interiors of Alaska by plane through its airport. The port is connected to the Alaska Marine Highway and so there are many different ways to get in and out of Valdez; the most popular is by ship, water taxi, or little seaplanes. Shopping abounds in this small but lively town. Visit the Bear Paw Trading Post that sells Valdez and Alaska souvenirs, native crafts, and jewelry and clothes. Harbor Landing Gifts located in Harbor Court is a gift shop and coffee bar in one that is also easily accessible from the port. A unique store in this port is A Rogue Garden which sells a range of items from vitamin and herbal supplements to books and gifts. Locally produced olive oil soaps and sundries are the specialty of Mineral Creek Essentials.

Things to See

Being a popular tourist destination, a number of Cruise Ships from Cruise Lines all over the world make College Fjord a port of call. Alaska Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America Cruises are a few of these Cruise Liners which include time in stopping by these natural glaciers especially the two biggest ones Harvard and Yale. The five biggest glaciers are complemented by dozens of smaller glaciers some of which growing spruce forests up to its ice edge. Wildlife in the form or orcas, colonies of seals, porpoises, and even Beluga whales add to the attractions in this fjord. Those who would like to indulge in some fishing can experience the abundance of halibut and salmon.

Bars and Restaurants

The Port of Valdez has restaurants that specialize in fresh seafood. The Alaska Halibut House in Meals Avenue serves seafood and also offers a salad bar. For outdoor dining, The Harbor Café in Harbor Drive offer burgers and sandwiches in an al fresco setting. For pastries, cakes, and coffee, Magpies Bakery in Galena Street is a charming and locally owned shop.
