From the Lisbon Port, you can get to the Alfama District by riding a Lisbon tram. In fact, many locals agree that this is the best and most efficient way of reaching the hilly district of Alfama. These famous ancient trams will squeeze you through steep and narrow streets and pass through famous landmarks like the Se Cathedral, an interesting church that looks like fortress. On top of the district, you will find the Castelo de Sao Jorge or St James Castle, which is surrounded by fascinating wooded gardens. Off the tram route, you can take a side trip to the lower Alfama area, where you will find the River Tagus, which is the oldest section of Lisbon that was once a fishing village.
