7.  What attractions are near the cruise port?

Private tour guides are available for  small groups. Byzantine architecture is observed on the Hagia Sophia, a church and mosaic gallery. Topkapi Palace used to be a summer house that now showcases jewelry, religious artifacts, manuscripts, and silk robes. Religious demonstrations are held at the 17th century Blue Mosque.

The Imperial Pavilion and Great Palace Mosaic Museum are part of this big-domed mosque. Islamic exhibits are seen at the 16th century Turkish and Islamic Art Museum. The Byzantine Great Palace used the Basilica Cistern or “sunken palace” as a reservoir.   

8.  What hotels are near the cruise port?

As a former palace of the Sultan, the Ciragan Palace Hotel spells luxury and is nearest to the Istanbul cruise terminal. Riding a taxi for 10 minutes brings you to Taksim where Istanbul Hilton and Marmara Istanbul are found.

At fashionable Sultanahmet, you will find a former prison converted into the Four Seasons hotel. The Swissotel lets you enjoy scenic city views and the Dolmabahçe Palace.

9.  What restaurants and shops are near the cruise port?

Food stalls and outdoor markets at the Golden Horn, the harbor of Istanbul, are good choices for great bites. The Istanbul fish sandwich is available through simple eateries under the Galata Bridge. Young Turks love to dine at the small streets off Istiklal Caddesi in Beyolgu where trendy bistros, cafes, and smooth restaurants are found. European-styled food for foreigners is prepared at Sultanahmet restaurants. 

10. Are ships docked at the port, or are passengers ferried from the port to the ship?

The ships dock on the Yolcu Salonu or “passenger terminal” found near the Bosphorus Strait at Karakoy Maritime Terminal.
