Kauai Port Guide

Kauai port offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. These beaches have commonly been used as locations for movies, including Raiders of thev Lost Ark and Jurassic Park. Kauai has been nicknamed "The Garden Island." Ships arriving at the Kauai port of call dock at the harbor in Nawiliwili. Car rentals are recommended for sights not within easy walking distance. Shore excursions are often an easy way to reach out-of-the-way places.


Two shopping centers are found in Kalapaki Beach. Hanapepe hosts several craft shops and art galleries. The Kong Lung Center in Kilauea has several stores.

Banana Patch Studio in Hanapepe offers hand-decorated tiles and other handicrafts. Banana Joe's is a large fresh fruit stand in Kilauea. The Lotus Gallery has some lovely pieces of art.

Things to See

Mountains and canyons make up an important part of Kauai's landscape. The deepest canyon, Waimea, is half a mile deep and 10 miles long. It bears a striking resembelance to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Koke'e State Park isabove the canyon and offers camping as well as hiking. Kawaikini Peak, the highest mountain, stands at over 5,000 ft. tall. Several rivers run through the island, making it ideal for kayakers. Wailua Falls is an impressive set of triple falls.

The beaches are the most popular attraction on the island. Swimming and sunbathing are great ways to spend time there. Surfers are sure to have a good time, and snorkeling in this area is good. Kalapaki Beach is the closest to the dock. The Na Pali Coast has most of the sandy beaches. Many of these are only accessible by hiking trails, helicopter or boat. Lydgate State Park has a blocked-off ocean swimming area especially for kids. This helps protect them against the strong current.

Huleia National Wildlife Refuge has a sizable bird population. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is adjacent to the lighthouse and also has an impressive number of various wild animals.

The Kaua`i Museum is located in Lihu`e. It's devoted to the people, culture and geography of the island. Koloa Town has a museum and memorial dedicated to Japanese sugar cane workers. The Kauai Heritage Center of Hawaiian Culture & the Arts has enough local art to satisfy any taste.

National Tropical Botanical Garden of the Pacific has lovely examples of the floral and plant life of the area.

The Kilauea Lighthouse is located in the small town of Kilauea. The lighthouse is located on a peninsula with really beautiful views.

Houses of worship include Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran parishes, a United church and a Hindu monastery.

Restaurants and Bars

Hamura's Saimin Stand has great noodle dishes in several varieties, including roasted pork. They also offer a good dessert pie. Pho Kauai offers Pacific Rim dishes. Duane's Ono Burger is a well-known burger stand.

The Point Bar offers lovely sunset views to enjoy while sipping drinks. The Library offers a good selection of cocktails.
