Bom Bom Island Port Guide

Located on Principe Island, the Bom Bom Island Port is a splendid spot to visit for adventurers as well as for tranquility lovers. Principe is a part of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. The 2 islands are situated close to the Equator in the Gulf of Guinea and along the West African shore. Bom Bom Village, which means "good good village," is one of the few on the island. It is located north of the main city, Santo Antonio, and the Principe Airport. A wooden walkway leads to the Bom Bom Island cruise terminal from Principe Island. Although it is a small piece of earth, it offers a lot of tourist activities.

Depending on the season you visit the Bom Bom Island, there are several activities to try. If you are interested in fishing, July and September form the peak season for you. During the rest of the year, you can go scuba diving, hiking or benefit form the island tours organized by the Bom Bom Island Resort. If you are there from mid-July to mid-September, you can watch the whales; and a turtle program can be seen from December to March.

Shopping

The Bom Bom Island cruise port is not really for shopping maniacs, as it gives you the possibility to enjoy amazing things like the freshness of the air, the breeze and the exotic flora and fauna of West Africa. However, there are souvenir shops and local crafts to make your memories of Bom Bom Island unforgettable.

Things to See

The area is notable for its rainforests, rich with birds and animals for your watching pleasure. Go fishing for yellow fin tuna, dorado, wahoo and barracuda. You would be taking part in the most important activity for an area with a rich history of fishing competitions. An interesting seasonal activity is whale watching, as the humpback whales visit the waters for mating in the summer. They offer a spectacular program of flipping, breaching and lob tailing.

The volcanic peaks of the Principe make the Bom Bom cruise port a wonderful place for hiking. The main places for this activity are the Rio Petroleum valley and the Pico Papagaio peak. On the road you will "meet" species like the Principian falcon, the Mona monkey and the African grey parrot. Island tours to different places like the town of Santo Antonio, Ro├ža of Belo Monte and Sundi and St. Joaquim. You can also follow the coast in a kayak to the villages of Praia Companje, Praia Borra or Praia Banana. Another seasonal activity is the fight for survival of the newborn turtles at Praia Sundi, enjoying the "Leatherback & Green Turtle Breeding Programme."

Restaurants and Bars

There isn't much of a choice when it comes to restaurants, as the only restaurant on the Bom Bom Island is the one at the resort dominating the place. The situation is the same in the rest of Principe, but the restaurant offers a wide variety of fresh seafood, combined with a breathtaking view of the calming blue ocean.
