The Nieuw Amsterdam has been known in the cruising industry since 1906. When Holland America launched Nieuw Amsterdam II in 1938, she was known as the “Darling of the Dutch,” and hosted a handful of celebrities and respected individuals. By 1983, Nieuw Amsterdam III was considered one of the most stylish ships of the time. Now again, in 2010, the Nieuw Amsterdam will once again sail the seas. The ship is adorned in the décor of New York City and will sail to ports like Greece, Italy and Turkey.
The Nieuw Amsterdam has spectacular views of the sea as you ride in her glass elevators. There is also the Culinary Arts Center for food enthusiasts and a jewelry boutique should you want to go shopping. But perhaps one of the highlights of the Nieuw Amsterdam ship is her Silk Den Lounge where you will be surrounded by great ocean views while sipping your favorite cocktail.
Continental dining is served with assigned seating or flexible seating in the main dining room. There’s also the Pinnacle Grill and Bar which offers guests the popular Seattle seafood and steaks. For Italian cuisine, there is Canaletto’s that features renowned dishes and desserts.
For ethnic or cultural cuisine, you can visit the new Pan-Asian Restaurant or Tamarind. Each restaurant offers their unique experience. The Silk Den Lounge can be found beside the restaurant. Or, if you need a quick pick-me-up coffee, visit the Explorations Bar with its library and Internet center that offers a quiet place to sit and read.
There are four different kinds of staterooms: Suite, Veranda, Ocean-view and Interior.
All rooms come with two twin beds, which are convertible to a queen-sized bed. Veranda and Suite rooms have a king-sized bed and are equipped with sofa beds and floor-to-ceiling windows. They also have a separate living and dining room.
All rooms feature Sealy ®Premium Euro-Top mattresses, terry bathrobes and Egyptian cotton towels and a flat-panel and DVD player. The staff tries to make you feel right at home with a bucket of fresh fruits to welcome you on board as well.
Entertainment and Recreation
The ship offers the Show Lounge for full-production shows, and the Crow’s Nest with live music and nightly dancing. The Ocean Bar, on the other hand, offers live classical music and a place to relax and watch the ocean. The Silk Den Lounge allows for quiet drinks and chats with your fellow travelers as well. There is also a casino onboard.
The ship has the Greenhouse Spa and Salon for a massage or haircut. There’s also a full sports court in the fitness center and the Lido Pool lets you take a quick dip. There are also a number of boutiques in the Atrium.
Eleven dollars per guest, each day is typical, plus a 15% beverage tip.
Taking the Kids
A Nieuw Amsterdam cruise has special activities each day for kids aged 3 to 12. There’s also the Loft and Oasis, the nightclubs especially designed for teenagers from 13 to 17.
