The Prinsendam Cruise Ship of Holland America was originally launched in 1988. It was later acquired by Seabourn Cruise Line and renamed the Seabourn Sun. In 2002, the Seabourn Sun was transferred to Holland America Line, which renamed it the Prinsendam or ‘Princess’. Nicknamed the Elegant Explorer, the Prinsendam is a smaller ship that accommodates 793 passengers. This makes the Prinsendam ideal for a more intimate and quiet cruise experience.

Entertainment and Night Life
No matter how you plan to spend the night on a Prinsendam cruise, the ship offers diverse entertainment and nightlife options for everybody. Guests can choose from a selection of lounges: the sophisticated Explorer’s Lounge is perfect for cocktails and quiet tête-à-tête with piano music; the exquisite Oak Room is perfect for after-dinner brandy and cigars. Also, the Crow’s Nest Observation Lounge is said to be the best place on the ship to view the sea.
For more upbeat nights, the Ocean Bar features a large dance floor and bandstand. Lavish Broadway-style productions are offered in the Queen’s Lounge. You will also find a theatre and casino on board.
There is a wide range of onboard activities on the Prinsendam. There are two outdoor swimming pools. One of the pools offers a swim-up bar. You can enjoy pampering at the full-service Ocean Spa or wind down at the ships three whirlpools. Discover something new at HAL’s signature Explorations Speaker Series. Other notable recreation amenities include the golf simulator, art gallery, Erasmus Library and duty-free shopping boutique.
The Prinsendam ship underwent an extensive $25 million refurbishment in 2002. There are 155 luxurious staterooms equipped with ample storage for long cruises. All staterooms are well appointed with euro-top mattresses, 250-thread count cotton bed linens, flat panel TV and DVD player and more. Also, there are 10 lanai cabins with private balconies.
Taking the Kids
Because of its long itineraries to and remote destinations, the Prinsendam is ideal for older passengers with ample time for extended travel. Even though there are supervised Club HAL children’s programs, the ship is not the best option for families with children.
