Athena Cruise Ship

People who want to avoid all the hype and noise of a massive cruise liner should consider having a holiday cruise on board the Athena Cruise ship. Originally created as a transatlantic ocean liner, Athena has a total of eight passenger decks which feature two lovely elevators. In 1994, the ship changed ownership and underwent a massive renovation at a cost that reached a staggering $US 150 million. As a result, the ship was transformed into a beautiful and more contemporary cruise ship.

Originally built in 1948, Athena had a long and storied sailing history. The ship used to be an ocean liner before it became a cruise ship in 1994. The 1,158-ton, 192.9-feet long vessel can only accommodate a maximum of 641 passengers. The ship has a total of 260 friendly and accommodating crew members and the officers on board are mostly Portuguese. The ship attracts mostly middle and senior aged cruise goers from Great Britain and America. The ship boasts a very good crew to passenger ratio.

The ship has a total of four restaurants, one of which is the main dining venue. The main dining room on board the ship is the Olissipo Restaurant which serves mainly European cuisine. The meals are served in single nightly seating. A great alternative dining venue is the Lotus Lounge where guests can have buffet breakfast and lunch. Other places for fine dining and great food include the Grand Italis Restaurant, Il Giardino, and the Pizzeria on board the ship.

Entertainment ad Nightlife

Nightlife on board the ship is never boring. Athena has as many night time offerings as many much larger cruise ships. Gamblers, onlookers and wishful thinkers can have a great time over at the ship’s casino area. If you want to watch entertaining singers and dancers on stage, the place to go is the Calypso Show Lounge. Passengers can also watch current and classic movies at various times at the Cyclopes’ Auditorium. Keep in mind though that the cruise ship is especially designed for seniors, not for children or families.

The ship has a total of 276 cabins, 220 of which have ocean view, while 48 are inside. However, only 8 of the outside cabins have a small private balcony. Some of the amenities inside the cabin include a bath tub and shower, a television, telephone, a small refrigerator, a mini bar, a hair dryer and personal safe. Guests can choose between twin bedded cabins or double bedded cabins. Guests staying at the luxurious suites can enjoy a wide balcony and a Jacuzzi.

Despite its size, Athena still has all the usual amenities that can be found in any cruise liner. The ship has only one swimming pool where you can hang out and relax. For those who want to remain in shape, they may want to head over to the fitness center complete with exercise equipments. Be rejuvenated in the health and wellness center which offers sauna and massage treatment. Guests on board can also stay pretty in the ship’s beauty salon which offers wide array of beauty treatments.
