One of the six sister ships of the Malaysian-owned Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the Norwegian Gem Cruise ship offers an incredible relaxed cruise setting with no fixed dining times and no formal dress codes, ideal for people who want a freestyle cruise experience. Originally launched in October 2007, Norwegian Gem is NCL’s youngest ship.
The gathering place for guests on board is the ship’s magnificent Crystal Atrium. The ship also boasts of full-sized 10-pin bowling alleys—a first on modern cruise ships. But the ship’s main attraction is definitely her freestyle cruising, which breaks the formality of traditional cruise ships. The 965 feet, 93,502 ton vessel can accommodate up to 2,276 passengers. Norwegian Gem has a total of 1,185 international crew members trained to meet your cruising needs.
The ship features ten different dining options, which serve a wide variety of dishes, such as the Teppanyaki Room, Le Bistro French Restaurant, and the Blue Lagoon diner, which is open 24 hours a day. The Grand Pacific and the Magenta are the two main dining areas on board. Other dining options include the Orchid Garden, La Cucina, and the Tequila Latin/Tapas.
Entertainment and Nightlife
Guests will enjoy some lavish Broadway-inspired entertainment featured each night. The ship also features several amazing bars such as the Spinnaker Lounge, Topsiders, Bai Hai and The Great Outdoors. For a more quiet and romantic evening, head over to the Star Bar located near Cagney’s Steakhouse. The Bar Central on deck 6 is the place where you can find several interconnected bars.
The cabins on board are smaller compared to other traditional ships, but all feature a small seating area equipped with a table, chair and sofa. Some of the amenities include a small refrigerator, television, a hair dryer, toiletries, and a personal safe. The closet and drawer-shelf is quite spacious, while suites feature a walk-in closet. Each cabin also provides broadband Internet connection for laptops. Guests staying in one of the suites will also enjoy whirlpool tubs and a butler service.
Some of the many recreational activities on board the Norwegian Gem include a 30-foot-high rock climbing wall and a 24-hour fitness center. At the Crystal Atrium is a Wii Nintendo system with a high-definition projection screen. Guests can have some pampering time over at the Ying & Tang Spa which offers all kinds of relaxing treatment. The 24-hour Body Waves Fitness Center has state of the arts fitness equipment and floor to ceiling windows providing a breathtaking view of the ocean while guests work out. Gamers on board will also have a grand time over at the Gem Club Casino which features 200 slot machines and all the usual games.
The recommended total gratuity on board per day is $10 per person. A 15 percent tip for bar service is also recommended.
Taking the Kids
Norwegian Gem is an ideal ship for families. Kids age two to 17 will enjoy the Kid’s Crew program which offers a wide array of complimentary activities. Children will also have a great time playing the Nintendo Wii game over at the Crystal Atrium.
