A 40-minute ride from Progresso will bring you to the heart of Merida, Colonial Centro. Central to its existence are the old churches and the market place. You will be able to visit the Catedral de San Ildefonso, finished in 1598, the Government Palace, Montejo's House, and the Central Park. As you travel through the city, you will notice the wide avenues and large main square. The history behind the construction of this city is truly a lesson in recycling as the building began with the dissembling of the Maya pyramids that were found there.
