Progresso
FLAMINGOS OF CELESTUN
$415 For a Private Car for 2 People (Prices Vary)
Celestun is a quaint fishing village famous
for its magnificent colonies of pink flamingos. These elegant birds
require a special habitat with swampy ground, shallow salt water and
protection from the tides and flooding. Dense mangroves and low forests
with high temperatures provide the abundant marine crustaceans that are
necessary to give the plumage of these birds its distinctive coloring.
You
will be driven from the cruise ship pier in Progresso to the Celestun
Estuary. There you will be given a 90 minute boat ride to witness the
harmonious and highly organized flight of hundreds of flamingos as they
move from one spot to another.
The best time to see them is between March and August, the time of the
year when they leave their nests to eat the rice plankton. Part of the
boat excursion includes a visit to the fresh water springs where the water
is sweet, tranparent and ideal for swimming. You will also visit the
petrified forest, a strange place where you can see the trunks of the
Tampeten trees with their roots in the water.
We'll give you ample time to shop the vendor stands for souvenirs and
