Come explore and see the natural beauty of Roatan. There is a long irregular mountain ridge on Roatan, with some hilltops reaching close to 780', which contributes beautiful scenery while you drive.

You will see the changes in the island as you head towards Oak Ridge. This area is known as "the Venice of the Caribbean", named for their unique homes perched over the water and the mangroves. Here board a dorie boat and glide through the maze of mangroves that highlight this area of the island. Learn how the mangroves support the local ecology. Keep your camera ready for a sighting of egrets, herons or other aquatic birds that call the mangroves home.

To understand the people of Roatan, it is essential to meet and to see the dances of the Garifuna Indians. Roatan's Garifuna population are their most unique inhabitants; they continue to speak their own Garifuna language, although most speak English and Spanish, too. They are descended from the mixing of the Carib Indians and black Africans, and have been around this part of the world for several hundred years. You will find their colorful artwork here and in the craft kiosks and they make great souvenirs of your day.

Iguanas, those descendants of the dinosaur, are a protected species on Roatan. That's important, as they are the main ingredient in iguana stew, a local specialty. About 20 years ago, Sherman Arch started his Iguana Hideout and now has about 2700 iguanas roaming freely about the property. We have not seen anything like it anywhere in our travels, so enjoy this special stop.

We will stop on our way back to the pier at Las Palmas Shopping Center. The term "shopping center" conjures up a different image in our heads than you will find here on Roatan. That's a good thing, as you want to see and bring home items not found in our malls. Look forward to finding clothing, cigars, some liquors, wood carvings and local crafts in the row of shops here, and then you will return to the pier to stash them all for your return home.
