HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS OF CHARLOTTE AMALIE ON FOOT
$35 Per Person  (1 1/2 Hours)

As with most of the Caribbean islands, the history here goes back to about 600 AD, the days of the Arawaks. Much, much later, Columbus sailed here and reports of the island filtered back home. The Carib Indians appeared and the never-ending struggle between the two tribes, along with decades of wars with the Europeans trying
to conquer the island resulted in the ultimate success of the Dutch.

Danish settlement began in the late 1660's and several of the original structures still stand. Your walk begins at the Emancipation Gardens and you will be able to view the interiors of a couple of these buildings.

As you tour with a guide from the Historical Trust, you will learn about the architectural and historic aspects of this town, once recognized as the second most populous city of Denmark.

The area is fascinating but also a strenuous climb. In your short two-hour walk, you will take in at least 10 historical sites, several of which will take your breath away. I guarantee that will happen at least twice. The first will be your initial view from Blackbeard's Castle, newly restored hotel. The second will certainly be at the site of our meeting, the verandah at the Haagensen House.

As you continue your tour down towards the harbour and look back, you will not believe where you were!
