During the Klondike gold rush, the town was the gateway to both the Chilkoot and White Pass Trails, a funnel through which thousands of frenzied fortune-seekers passed. It is easy to escape into the surrounding mountains or to head up the Chilfoot Trail where only the hardy stray.

Lucky for you, your jeep and your guide have proven themselves able to weather anything. Although the roads are partially paved between Skagway and Carcross, the coastal scenery and deep ravine views once you cross into British Columbia will make focusing on the road a tough feat. Beginning at Skagway, the road climbs for 14 miles to the 3,292 foot summit near the border. Between Skagway and the border the road roughly parallels the old White Pass Trail.

As you begin your tour, you will note along the way the Gold Rush Cemetary, where Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith and Frank Reid are buried, both legendary figures in Alaska.

As you travel, you will see Porcupine Creek, an old campsite for the stampeders on the Trail of '98. Also Pitchfork Falls, whose name speaks for itself, and the Captain William Moore Bridge, which spans 110-foot gorge, are on your route.

Dead Horse Gulch, the Bracket Wagon Trail and Tormented Valley are sites to remember. All in all, this incredible venture will take you on a trek both forwards in space and backwards in time.
